Summer is finally here and the cobbled streets of Canterbury are buzzing. As the mercury soars, the events calendar is also hotting up and there is no better time to visit our enchanting cathedral city. Read on for our pick of the best things to do in Canterbury over the next few weeks…
Master illusionist Derren Brown is bringing his mind-bending marvellousness and transfixing trickery to Canterbury! Fresh from the West End, Derren Brown: Underground is coming to The Marlowe between June 26th-30th. Tickets are still available here. Prepare to be baffled. Oh, and heckling not advised!
The St Edmund’s Festival kicks off on June 27th with a world-class concert featuring violinist Tamsin Little, OBE, and celebrated pianist Martin Roscoe. The event, at the school’s Francis Musgrave Performing Arts Centre, promises to be a real treat, with music from Ravel, Brahms and Beethoven. Tickets are still available here. The festival runs until July 3rd and other highlights will include a star turn from award-winning saxophonists John Harle and Jess Gillam and workshops with ceramicist and star of BBC Two’s The Great Pottery Showdown Keith Brymer Jones. Don’t miss it!
And finally, Elgar’s The Dream Of Gerontius will be brought to magical life by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Canterbury Choral society in Canterbury Cathedral on June 23rd, alongside mezzo Kathryn Rudge, tenor Andrew Staples and bass Edward Grint. Gerontius is considered to be his best work by many (including Elgar himself!), so why not book tickets and judge for yourself?
